After a 3-1 road-trip and being undefeated in 2013, the Trinity Western Spartans men’s volleyball team finally returned to Langley to take on a double-header against the Brandon Bobcats over the past weekend. With an impressive 10-2 record so far this season, the Spartans went out to the court looking to dominate like how they have been dominating throughout the season. The Spartans took a win and a loss in this double header with the CW third ranked Bobcats. Though they took a loss this weekend the Spartans still remain to be a threatening team in the CIS.

Thursday’s match was exciting to say the least. Both teams battled hard to their fullest potential. The Spartans were without Nick Del Bianco, who has been having a good season for the team. The Spartans started out strong as they managed to win a close first set 26-24. It was a close set from start to finish as neither team had more than a 2 point lead throughout the entire set, it was no surprise that the set was extended to an extra point. The Spartans answered the Bobcats’ kills as the Bobcats answered the Spartans’ kills. The Spartans were able to take advantage of the last swing of momentum making it 1-0 for the home team.

The second set was not at the same level of competitiveness as the first set. The Spartans were pumped with momentum as they crushed the Bobcats 25-15. The Spartans took off and didn’t look back as they started up 10-6 then eventually running away with it. The Spartans play great both offensively and defensively, showing why they are the defending champs. They fought hard and earned the win in this set. It was then a comfortable 2-0 lead for the Spartans. The momentum, however, did not continue through the third and fourth set.

It was the Bobcats who turned it around and cued for the comeback with a 25-19 third set victory over the Spartans. The Bobcats completed the comeback as they continued to win a harder fought forth set 25-22. With the comeback, the momentum was with the Bobcats for the fifth and final set. The defending champion Spartans did not let this happen. The Spartans played hard through the final set and won the match 3-2 with a 15-11 fifth set victory.

Notable Spartans for the win on Thursday include Steven Marshall who made 15 kills; Brad Kufske who had 11 kills, four blocks, three aces and seven digs; Lucas Van Berkel who made nine blocks; and Tyler Ko slowsky who made 15 digs.

On Saturday the Spartans were looking to repeat for another win and get 27 straight wins at the LEC. Unfortunately, the Bobcats come out with the win as they finished the double-header with a 3-2 victory over the Spartans.

The Spartans played a strong match although they lost. It was yet another quick 2-0 lead for TWU as they took the first two sets 25-16 and 26-24. Like the previous match, the Spartans had given up the lead. The Bobcats stormed through the third and forth sets, winning both 29-27 and 25-20. All these sets were hard battled by both teams. And it showed in the final set as it was just back and forth for both sides. It was classic volleyball and very exciting, but unfortunately the Spartans couldn’t repeat another win.

Leading the Spartans on Saturday’s match were Steven Marshall, who had 21 kills; Brad Kufske, who  had 13 kills; Derek Thiessen, who had a career-high 11 kills; and Lucas Van Berkel, excelling defensively with 11 blocks.

The Spartans will be back at the LEC on January 18-19 against Manitoba. It should be another close and exciting game of volleyball. Come and support your Spartans!
