Artists who go beyond merely playing music

Writing lyrics, playing instruments, singing, and recording—many musicians play a variety of roles in their bands from. However, one role that often goes unseen is that of music production—the behind-the-scenes birthing of an album. Many musicians own bigger record companies, and self-produce not only their own music, but also music for many other bands. Artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Brian Burton, Jeff Tweedy, and Adam Dutkiewaz are all artists who have not only created music, but also made it possible for numerous other artists to make their own impact on the music world.

1. Appropriate for his somewhat experimental style, Sufjan Stevens co-owns Asthmatic Kitty Records with his step-father Lowell Brams. His label has produced for indie bands such as Chris Schlarb, My Brightest Diamond, I Heart Lung, and Half-Handed Cloud. Stevens has also produced most of his own albums, as well as Rosie Thomas’s These Friends of Mine and The Welcome Wagon’s Welcome to the Welcome Wagon and Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing (ep).

2. After producing numerous albums under Nonesuch records, Wilco wanted the freedom of an independent record label; the band decided to create their own record label called dBpm. Band members Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone joined with producer Tom Schick and produced Wilco’s latest album The Whole Love under dBpm. Tweedy has also produced Mavis’ Staples You Are Not Alone, as well as the LP Traphouse from Rock for Kids These Days, a young, Chicago based band.

3. Adam Dutkiewicz has made quite a mark on the world of metal/screamo music. As a musician, Dutkiewicz has played guitar for Alive or Just Breathing, The End of Heartache, As Daylight Dies, Disarm the Descent, and Aftershock. He has also done a side project known as Burn Your Wishes, which he did with Ken Susi of Unearth. Currently, Dutkiewiez is guitarist and backup vocalist for the metalcore band Killswitch Engage. In the screamo and hard rock scene, he is well-known for producing numerous bands including As I Lay Dying, UnderØath, Unearth, From Autumn To Ashes, Johnny Truant, Parkway Drive, The Agony Scene, Every Time I Die, August Burns Red.

4.Better known by his stage name Danger Mouse, Brian Burton’s musical accomplishments and projects span many genres including indie rock, hip hop, alternative, and rock. He produced the Gorillaz’s Demon Days, Beck’s Modern Guilt, and Nora Jones’ Little Broken Hearts, and played a part in composing the music in each as well. He is, perhaps, most famous for his recording as a musician with Gnarls Barkley and his side project Broken Bells, where he worked alongside James Mercer of The Shins. He also produced the Grey album, a mix of The Beatle’s The White Album and Jay Z’s The Black Album. In recent news, he is rumored to be working on up to 12 songs with U2 on a new album, tentatively entitled Songs of Ascent, that will hopefully be released in the coming year.
